FASHION NAILS

Get as creative as you like; the choices are endless, with colours in every imaginable spectrum. Do not stick to pinks and reds, but try some of the wilder shades of green, blue, yellow and silver. With all sorts of commercially produced nail adornments from rhinestones and gems, striping tape and transfers, you are spoilt for choice. The pictures on this post show a pretty, commercially produced jewelled nail overlay that is easy to do yourself.

Follow the basic manicure steps up to the nail polish application. Apply the basecoat, followed by two coats of your chosen shade of nail polish.

Select the correct size decorative nail overlay for each finger, filing your natural nail and the sides of the artificial nail for a perfect fit. Bear in mind that your own nails need to be the same length as the transparent overlay for the desired effect. Carefully apply glue to the overlay.

Slowly lower the overlay into place and hold it firmly until it sets. (To remove, file the tips of the overlay to break through the protective top-coat. Then soak your nails in non-acetone-based nail polish remover until soft. Wipe off the softened plastic and glue to reveal your natural nail underneath).

POLISH TIPS

  • Avoid quick-dry polishes, which generally contain acetone that parches your nails. Thicker, slower-drying varnish holds moisture and gives nails more flexibility.
  • Roll polish bottle in your palms to mix. Never shake - this causes air bubbles and uneven application.
