If you look in the mirror, your skin looks like a simple covering for the body. In fact this is a deceptive image: consider that the skin is the largest living organ in the human body, as essential and hard working as the brain or heart, and the closest contact we have with the outside world. From a distance, your skin appears smooth and flat, but on closer inspection you will see that a network of tiny grooves, which change shape as the skin moves, marks the surface. A cross section looks a little like a complex Dagwood sandwich, with various layers and filling. The two skin layers - the epidermis and dermis - rest on a third layer of subcutaneous fat, and send signals to the brain to set various physiological functions in motion. In order to take the best care of your skin, it's important to understand how these layers work.

LAYERS OF THE SKIN



THE EPIDERMIS
Your skin's front line of defence is the epidermis. It allows light to partially pass through it as it would through frosted glass, and is nourished by blood vessels in the deeper layers of the skin that provide it with oxygen and 'skin food'. Plump, moist skin cells are developed in the basal layer of the epidermis. As each new layer of skin cells form, the cells move up towards the skin's surface, becoming flattened as they do so. By the time they reach the outer horny layer of the skin - known as the stratum corneum - they are effectively dead. These layers of densely packed cells, known as corneocytes, are filled with a protein called keratin, and a fatty lipid. Like the tiles of a roof, they overlap in layers to form a strong, protective shield that prevents water loss. Throughout your life, the cells of the surface layer are continually being worn away and replaced with new cells from below. In normal skin, it takes about 30 days for the cells to move up to the surface. If the outer layer is being lost quickly - due to sunburn, for example - these cells will be replaced more swiftly.

Below the stratum corneum are the Langerhans cells, which patrol for invaders, and the melanocytes - cells that produce the pigment melanin which helps determine the colour of your hair and skin. Melanocytes evolved to help the skin ward off dangerous UV radiation; the melanin on the skin surface absorbs UV light, protecting the cells below. Within the melanocyte, melanin is packaged in small membrane sacs called the melanosomes. The difference in pigmentation of various ethnic groups is due to the way in which the pigment is packed in these melanosomes. Skin cells in black-skinned people do not contain more melanocye cells, but the melanin granules are larger and individually dispersed. Black-skinned people, therefore, are genetically programmed to be more resistant to UV damage because of the profusion of melanin within their cells. People with white skin tend to suffer more from unprotected sun exposure because they have less melanin, and because their melanosomes are smaller and grouped together in membrane-bound clumps. Skin cells in Asian people contain smaller melanosome complexes that are more densely packed than those found in Caucasian skin cells.

MELANOSOME COMPLEXES

THE DERMIS
The is composed entirely of living cells. While the epidermis can repair itself, the dermis can become permanently damaged. This layer consists mainly of collagen, a protein that is responsible for the structural support (i.e. strength and resilience) of the skin. Collagen is packaged in bundles held together by elastic fibres. These are made up of another protein, elastin, which gives the skin its tone, plumpness and elasticity. Also found in the dermis are the sebaceous glands, hair follicles and sweat glands. The main function of sweat glands is to regulate the body's temperature. They are distributed over the entire body surface, with a larger number on the palms, soles and forehead. the sebaceous glands produce sebum (oil), the skin's natural lubricant. They are very sensitive to hormones, especially male hormones, which increase the gland's size and the secretion of sebum. (That's why males are more prone to acne, especially during puberty). Sebaceous glands therefore play a key role in determining facial skin type.

Do men and women age differently?
There is definitely a difference in male and female skin and so also in the ageing process. Women have less collagen than men to begin with, and because men have a thicker stratum corneum and produce more sebum than women, the lipid film on their skin surface is more pronounced. Furthermore, men's sebaceous glands are active well into their eighties. Also, testosterone, which is found in far higher levels in men, increases the rate of cell turnover in the basal layer and enhances collagen production, thereby thickening the skin. While there is gradual thinning of skin with age in men (about 1% per year), the thickness of a woman's skin remains fairly consistent until menopause, when her oestrogen levels start to fall. Then she will experience a dramatic thinning of the skin, and decreased collagen synthesis and repair. In addition, there is an increase in intrinsic ageing with the failure of oestrogen production and reduced dermal hydration.

The functions of the skin
ABSORPTION AND ASSIMILATION
The skin is the gateway to the body and a barrier to the outside world. A substance can only be assimilated or used by the cells once it has been absorbed. Well-cleansed, exfoliated skin absorbs creams more easily, and massage or pressurized movements further aid this process. Absorption depends on the molecular structure of the product, which is why a moisturizer is absorbed, for example, but water and cleanser are not.

ELIMINATION
The skin rids the body of excess waste and toxins through the production of sweat and sebum.

SENSE OF TOUCH
The skin is full of nerve endings that transmit sensations like heat, cold, pressure and texture to the brain. Tingling skin, for example, is a neuro response and not an allergic response.

REGULATION OF BODY TEMPERATURE
The million of veins, capillaries and arteries that traverse the skin, together with the sweat glands, regulate our internal body temperature so that it remains constant, regardless of the external temperature. This is made possible by the contraction and expansion of these vessels as necessary (in cold and in heat respectively), and the production of perspiration by the sweat glands to cool the body down when it overheats.

PROTECTION
The skin protects the body, both physically - from bumps, shocks and water loss - and chemically - from infection and dehydration - by means of the acid mantle.

On one square inch of cheek there are some 30 nerves, 15 sensory receptors for cold, 80 receptors for heat and 1 300 pain receptors.

These cells constantly renew themselves, leaving the so-called 'dead cells' on the surface of the skin. The dermis, or middle layer, is the one through which we feel sensations due to the presence of papillae attached to the nerve endings. It contains collagen and elastin which create the skin's elasticity, the sweat-glands and the sebaceous (oil) glands. It is when the dermis changes that the signs of ageing appear. The hypodermis is the deepest layer of the skin and is made up of a fatty tissue that provides nourishment to the upper layers. It contains the blood vessels and nerves, conserves body heat and protects the bones and muscles, not to mention that it is the hypodermis that gives the face the firmness of its contours.

To drain your face, remove all make-up and cleanse thoroughly. Then apply a gentle, circular palm massage positioning the hands as follows:

  • Cheeks: put your hands on your cheeks above the side of the nose. Hold this position for 10 to 15 seconds.
  • Chin and facial contour: rest your chin in the palms of your hands which should be joined together at the wrists. Enclose th oval of your face in your hands. Hold this position for 10 to 15 seconds.

Sun tolerance

We do not all react the same way to sun exposure. Your body can tolerate more or less sun depending on your skin type. If you have dark hair and eyes and matt skin then you should have a naturally higher sun tolerance factor than a blonde with blue eyes. But the more you expose your skin to the sun, the more vulnerable it becomes. To protect itself the skin produce melanine, which is also what give you your tan. Some people produce more melanine than others; some produce better quality melanine than others. The key to safe and better tanning is to stimulate the production of melanine.

Tyrosine and vitamins
Certain creams contain natural melanine - enhancing properties such as tyrosine. You should begin to use them twelve days before exposure to the sun and take plenty of vitamins. The three antioxidant vitamin A, C and E form a barrier against the increased production fo free radicals by the solar rays. If your general intake of fruit and vegetables is low, increase your consumption for a month or so before you go to the sun. You can also take a beta-carotene supplement: this will tan the skin lightly and increase your sun tolerance.

35 PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST UV RAYS
In recent years a lot of research has been done on tanning and the effects of ultraviolet rays on the skin. This is invaluable in determining your individual needs and so enables you to plan a safe tanning programme.

UVA and UVB
Essentially the sun gives off two types of rays: infrared, which burn and cause sunstroke: and untraviolet, which penetrate the cutaneous barrier. The UVB rays (of average frequency) activate the melanocyctes which are responsible for the production of melanine, and slowly but surely bronze the skin. The UVA rays however (which are of a higher frequency) penetrate right through to the cells, damaging them and causing premature ageing and skin cancers. The idea then is to choose products which will protect the skin from the harmful solar rays whilst not blocking the beneficial ones.

High protection factors
Sun creams come with different protection factors indicating strength in filtering the harmful solar rays. The higher the number the greater the protection. For the first few days in the sun everyone should use a high protection-factor cream. After that the choice of sun-protection factor will depend on skin type.
Blondes and redheads with fair skins should not go lower than factor 30. If you have brown hair with a medium skin tone you can go down to factor 20 after the first week. People with dark hair and olive skin can use factor 15 or 10 after three or four days providing the sun cream is reapplied regularly.

In all cases, dermatologists advise that sun exposure should be before noon and after 4-5pm, and must be very gradual. Do 15 minutes the first day, adding ten minutes daily until reaching the maximum exposure time for your skin type, with two hours being the longest even the most sun resistant should stay in the sun.

Maintaining the skin's hydration rate
Prolonged exposure to the sun sets off real molecular changes that the skin has to spend several days repairing. Dehydration and production of poor-quality collagen are just two fo the effects. To prevent these problems get into good habits during and after tanning. Doing this will protect your skin from damaged and ensure a lasting colour.

When you leave the beach, always take a shower then dry yourself without rubbing and apply an after-sun milk on your body. Your face will need a stronger after-sun treatment, such as an ampoule of serum.

Avoid peeling
To prolong your tan once you have returned from your holiday it is essential to avoid peeling, which is the loss of cells through dryness. Continue your after-sun care for face and body for several weeks after your holiday. This will gradually replenish lost water and restructure the skin, making it more supple and giving it a healthy glow. If you have oily or combination skin, choose one with aloe; for normal or dry skin, select one with shea tree butter.

Lips are fragile The lips are extremely delicate with a very fine corneal layer and high vein content. The skin of the lips is ultra-thin and does not contain any sebum, which means that they have no natural protection from cold and dryness. To avoid chapped lips it is essential to apply a hydrating balm at regular intervals. The best ones are those containing natural ingredients: honey, grapefuit, plant extracts etc.

Your hands need you Your hands take a lot of wear and are in frequent contact with harmful substances such as detergents and hard water. Without protection they will suffer horribly in the cold. In the winter, more than any other time, you should use a hand cream, preferably several times a day. The ones with silicone, honey or lanolin protect the skin whilst the ones with shea tree butter or glycerine nourish the skin. After you wash your hands always be sure to dry them thoroughly before applying the cream.

Only one answer There is only one answer: give up smoking. Of course this is usually a lot easier said than done. No technique is going to work that well if you have not truly taken the decision to stop. If you are ready to give up, then there are a range of methods you can try: patches, acupuncture, homeopathy, plants, auriculotherapy, psychotherapy, group counselling and so on.

Dop not think twice about buying a cream for very dry skin, such as a cold cream, low in water but high in oil content. It will deposit hydrating agents on the skin's surface and leave a light protective film. In winter you get out your heavy woolly clothes, so do the same for your skin. Use natural oils (jojoba, wheatgerm, for example) to reinforce the effects of your protective day or night cream.

Forehead: place your thumbs in the centre of your forehead. Move in a circular motion going outwards towards the temples. Repeat three times. Finish by pressing the centre of the temples. Treating acne

3), 4), 5) Shintei, Bisho and Kyokusa
Position: place your head in your hands and apply gentle, repeated pressure to your forehead, first using your index fingers on the Shintei point, located in the middle of your forehead, near the hairline, and then on the Bisho and finally the Kyokusa pressure points, divide your forehead into six. Bisho is the second point from the centre and Kyokusa the third.
Action: this massage can bring about immediate relaxation.

Shosho
Position: between the depression of the lower lip and the chin.
Action: releases tension in the stress-prone jaw area. Use both middle fingers.

Sanchiku
Position: at the start of the eyebrow.
Action: if you are very tense, this point can be painful. Apply gentle pressure progressively and monitor the level of pressure. Use your middle finger.

Hyakue
Position: at the top fo the skull.
Action: it both relaxes your and stimulates your metabolic rate, thereby balancing your system. Apply firm pressure using both thumbs on the Hyakue - the balancing zone.
